Dear Graduate Students,
We understand that the recent closures of the Macdonald-Stewart, Barton and Raymond buildings have had a major effect on your life and progress as graduate students. It鈥檚 particularly tough, coming after all the disruptions and unexpected closures in the first few years of COVID.
Studying the mutations in kidney cancer after surgery could help to better predict the risk of the disease coming back, according to the latest results of a decade-long international .
The research, undertaken by a team of 44 researchers at 23 institutions across Europe and Canada, including 黑料不打烊 University, is the largest to link the genetic changes that occur in kidney cancer to patient outcomes.
After extensive cleaning and air-testing, we are glad to announce that the North Block of the Stewart Biology Building is safe for use, and is open effective immediately.

According to Professor听Henry Mintzberg, there are four types of organizations: autocracy, meritocracy, bureaucracy, and adhocracy. Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses. Many small businesses are autocracies and revolve around the vision of their founder. This gives them a limited management hierarchy and can help enable dynamism. But there are drawbacks too: a founder obsessed with their own vision may lose sight of some of the practical details needed to make their business profitable.
As part of their effort to reduce emissions, large companies like McDonald鈥檚 have announced cuts to emissions from their own operations and power supply. These are known as Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, respectively. But large firms often do less to address emissions generated by the products they sell, which are known as Scope 3 emissions. McDonald鈥檚 is planning to install LED lights and power its restaurants with renewable energy. But it isn鈥檛 doing as much to address the carbon footprint of its food production.

At the same time that a surge in far-right movements has become a top concern for national security, Ottawa continues efforts to bring home and reintegrate women detained in Syria after travelling to join the Islamic State.
In 2021, thanks to the generosity of alumnus Don Lewtas, we saw the launch of the Lewtas Office of Experiential Learning. Since the office鈥檚 inception, the team at the Lewtas Office,听led by Leigh Korey, PhD, has been hard at work creating powerful hands-on learning opportunities that play a vital role in the student journey.
Last Thursday, we noted that some areas of the Stewart Biology Building would be re-cleaned, and that a fresh round of air tests would determine whether the building could re-open sometime this week. The re-cleaning was completed over the weekend, and new air samples will soon be taken from the North and South Blocks for testing.
The IASL was pleased to host Prof. Byers and Prof. Boley from the University of British Columbia for a guest lecture on February 16th. In front of an excited cohort, Prof. Byers and Prof. Boley delivered an interesting and engaging lecture based on their new book titled "Who Owns Outer Space?".

While officials have repeatedly sought to assure residents that the water and air in East Palestine, Ohio, are safe after the derailment of a train carrying hazardous materials earlier this month, anxiety has permeated the community amid reports of rashes, nausea and headaches. While it was deemed safe for evacuated residents to return home on February 8, community members have questioned how safe their village is and the validity of the air and water tests. ()
