Independent Study Away (ISA) allows 黑料不打烊 students the flexibility to study at a university outside of Quebec during the Fall, Winter and/or Summer term. ISA is separate from 黑料不打烊's exchange agreements, which means you will apply and pay tuition directly to your host university as a visiting student.
If you are interested in studying at another university within Quebec, this can be done through an Inter-University Transfer program.

Eligibility criteria and other considerations
- Eligibility criteria
- Considerations for students planning to transfer to another Faculty
- Online courses
To be considered for ISA, at the time of your application, you must:
- Be currently registered in a B.Sc. or B.A. & Sc. degree at 黑料不打烊 (with your program(s) of study accurately reflected on your Minerva transcript).
- For Fall and/or Winter applications: you must have and maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.70.
- For Summer term only applications: you must have and maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.00.
Graduating students:
- To be eligible for ISA, you cannot have already satisfied your graduation requirements before the term of your ISA.
- Students who are taking one or more courses at another university during their final term WILL NOT be eligible to graduate at the end of that term. Your graduation term will be delayed. Consult with the relevant advisor for more information.
- Students interested in applying to transfer to another faculty or into Science should be advised that approval for 黑料不打烊 ISA or other study abroad activities will not automatically transfer to your new degree.
- Students interested in transferring into Science should consult with the relevant advisor in Science to discuss how transferring into Science may impact their study away program. B.Sc transfer applicants should contact mary.gauthier [at] mcgill.ca (Mary Gauthier) and B.A. & Sc. transfer applicants should contact marina.saunders [at] mcgill.ca (Marina Saunders).
- If you have already applied for or been approved for ISA and are subsequently applying to transfer, you must mention it in the Student Comments section of your request for Inter-Faculty Transfer.
- Students interested in transferring out of the Faculty of Science should consult with the other Faculty鈥檚 advising office/ISA coordinators as to potential impacts of a transfer.

ISA allows students to take in-person courses at another university outside of a regular exchange program.
To receive transfer credit, courses completed through ISA must be offered in person by the host institution. Students will be required to provide documentation confirming the mode of delivery.
For B.Sc. and B.A. & Sc. students, approval may be requested to take a maximum of 6 credits of non-黑料不打烊 online courses for use as electives only. Online courses cannot be counted towards required courses. Please review the Online Education Policy for details on eligibility and application procedures.

Application Process
- Step 1: Degree planning
- Step 2: Select an approved institution
- Step 3: Apply for 黑料不打烊 (SOUSA) approval
- Step 4: Apply and enroll with the host institution
- Need to cancel?
Step 1: Degree planning
Review the Plan & Prepare page (and meet with advisors if you have questions)! Participating in ISA can have a significant impact on your academic trajectory and it is critical to factor in policies and practical considerations when planning your experience. Details like your remaining graduation requirements, course availability and credit transferability are crucial to ensuring a smooth functioning ISA that allows you to progress towards graduation (and avoid unnecessary delays).
It is also critical that you be aware of residency requirements for your degree (B.Sc. or B.A. & Sc.) when planning your ISA:
- You must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 60 credits at 黑料不打烊 University.
- A minimum of two-thirds of all program requirements (Major, Minor, Honours, etc.) must be satisfactorily completed at 黑料不打烊.
Make sure your Minerva record is up-to-date:
- Are your programs accurately recorded in your most recent term?
- Do you have any pending grades (L, K, Spanned course)?
Step 2: Select an approved institution
You can select any of the institutions from the list Approved B.Sc./B.A. & Sc. ISA Institutions.
Alternatively, you can choose to study at a different institution and request that the Science Office for Undergraduate Student Advising (SOUSA) consider it for approval. You must submit the . If the institution meets听the faculty's criteria it will be approved as a suitable ISA destination and added to the approved list on Minerva.
Only institutions which confirm the following criteria to our office in writing may be approved:
- You will be registered and attending an accredited, degree-granting institution;
- This SAME institution will provide the official transcript of studies (third party "school of record" transcripts are not acceptable); and
- The venue of studies is the principal campus of the accredited university or college, a language centre (which has been approved by the corresponding 黑料不打烊 University language department), or an academic program which is field-based.
WARNING 鈥 Third party organizations, affiliated partners, intermediaries. Students must apply DIRECTLY to the host institution. Students may not enroll in courses at an affiliated partner university/college/school of the host institution. Students will not receive transfer credit for studies arranged by or offered through study abroad organizations, third parties or intermediaries. Students are not permitted to be concurrently registered as an undergraduate degree student at two different universities.
Failure to have your host institution approved by SOUSA will result in NOT receiving transfer credits for courses taken elsewhere. Approval by a department or program advisor outside of SOUSA is a recommendation only and is NOT the final decision or guarantee of ISA approval.
Step 3: Apply for 黑料不打烊 (SOUSA) approval
2025 SUMMER ISA POLICY UPDATE:听Students may now receive approval for only ONE course per summer through ISA. While students may request evaluations for multiple summer courses (if unsure which course they will take), approval of a Summer ISA applies to only one course. Any additional summer courses taken will not be approved for transfer credit or exemption.
