Three ribs of a horse show the parietal pleura lined with a thick layer of fibrinous purulent exudate.

Comment

Osler made reference to the results of a horse post-mortem at a meeting of the Montreal Medico-Chirurgical Society on Feb 2, 1883 (noted in the Canada Medical and Surgical Journal 1882-83 XI:500). At this time, however, he spoke of pneumonia and made no reference to pleuritis, and it is unlikely that this was the specimen which he showed.

Mr. Clement D.V.S., most likely refers to A. W. Clement, whom Osler knew as聽a veterinary student at the Montreal Veterinary School.聽Among other things, the two studied Montreal pigs聽and published in 1883 a report on the three most common parasites transmissible to man (trichina, cysticercus, and echinococcus).
