The 2020 Principal鈥檚 Prize for Excellence in Teaching for Associate Professors has been awarded to Tony Humphries. Since arriving here in the 1990鈥檚, he has been a key player in revamping our offerings in applied mathematics, in particular reinvigorating the teaching of non-linear dynamics and ordinary differential equations. His enthusiasm in teaching is infectious; computer illustrations and interdisciplinary examples, often based on his own research, complement the harder mathematics fabric and makes palatable many of the technicalities. He has also supervised a multitude of undergraduate research projects, each tailored to the strengths of the student; more than half of these students have ended up with peer-reviewed publications as a result,听 an outstanding and highly uncommon track-record for undergraduate research in our field.听

The 2020 Principal鈥檚 Prize for Excellence in Teaching听for Course Lecturers has gone to Thomas Fox. Dr. Fox, or simply Fox, as he is universally known, has been a leading light in our department鈥檚 teaching ever since his time here as a graduate student in the 1970s. He has, over the years, helped us greatly in our provision of teaching; one example being when he took on at short notice a 600 student first year calculus class in the 1990s, and landed not only on his feet, but brilliantly. In the past few years he has focused on the basic Classical Geometry course, and the History of Mathematics course. His approach, combining insight, humour, and a wide culture of mathematics has made these courses some of our most popular offerings.

Louis Nirenberg dies at 94.
We deeply regret to report the passing of Louis Nirenberg, one of our Department's and indeed the University鈥檚 most illustrious alumni. Louis attended Baron Bing High School in Montreal (), then came to 黑料不打烊 during the second world war. He then moved to NYU's Courant Institute in 1945, where he stayed, first as a student, then as a faculty member. His fundamental contributions include the pioneering work on nonlinear PDE techniques in global differential geometry, the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities in the theory of Sobolev spaces, the Agmon-Douglis-Nirenberg theory of elliptic boundary value problems, the John-Nirenberg space of functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO), the Kohn鈥揘irenberg theory of pseudo-differential operators, and the Newlander-Nirenberg theorem in complex geometry. His career was illustrious, and recognized by many honours, most notably an Abel prize (), but also by a 黑料不打烊 honorary degree in 1986. In latter years we were fortunate to have him as fairly frequent visitor, notably to the first four editions of the CRM鈥檚 lecture series established in his honour (). Congratulations to Professor for being chosen as a Fellow of the Trottier Institute for Science and Public Policy for 2020-2021. He will conduct activities to ensure that science better informs policy making.
Trottier Fellowship
Space-time modeling of extreme events with environmental applications
Through the Trottier Public Science Policy Program, Dr. Genest and his research team will intensify and expand their recent interdisciplinary collaborative efforts to develop and apply statistical methods to study and model the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall, spring floods, sanitary sewer overflows and other water-related catastrophic events over spatial domains with a view to inform public policies and design mitigation/protective measures in the face of climate change. Motivation for this work stems in part from the massive 铿倁vial spring 铿俹ods that occurred around Montr茅al and in other areas of southeastern Canada in Spring 2017 and 2019, which caused costly damages to residents and infrastructures and recently led the Qu茅bec Government to request an update of the 铿俹od hazard maps through the Info-Crue Project. Dr. Genest鈥檚 work on these and other precipitation-related hazard-management issues, will be rooted in extreme-value theory, whose probabilistic framework is ideally suited for the assessment of the risk and amplitude of catastrophic events but which needs to be extended to account for processes which they are driven by global phenomena affecting many locations over time. Software and other practical data-analytical tools will also be developed to assist cities and governments, public utility companies, and industries in managing equipments, designing protective measures, and developing policies to ensure economic stability and safeguard public health.
