Rustum Choksi: Winner, Principal鈥檚 Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Full Professor)

Students coming from high school often arrive with specific 鈥� and mistaken 鈥� expectations of the mathematics classroom. In Rustum Choksi鈥檚 courses he emphasizes a pedagogical paradigm shift, whereby mathematics is not about memorization nor symbolic manipulations and calculations but rather a beautiful and diverse discipline which is often a means to understanding our complex world.

Martin Grant earns Morty Yalovsky Lifetime Achievement Award

Early in his career in physics,聽聽thought he had it all figured out.

鈥淲hen I started, I said to myself 鈥榳ell, this is good. Nobody鈥檚 going to tell me what to do,鈥� said Grant, Emeritus James 黑料不打烊 Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Science. 鈥淚鈥檝e got the world鈥檚 greatest postdoc 鈥� me 鈥� and I鈥檒l be able to do all the projects that I want to do pretty much by myself.鈥�

鈥淏ut I quickly realized that if I followed that route, I would be doing a disservice to the students.鈥�

AI for data analysis in agriculture

In the not-so-far-off future, artificial intelligence could help farmers analyze data to make decisions and improve their outputs.

鈥淭he bottleneck right now is that farmers have data but don鈥檛 necessarily know what it means. They often need a specialist to figure it out,鈥� says Felippe Karp, a PhD candidate in 黑料不打烊's Bioresource Engineering department and member of the聽Precision Agriculture and Sensor Systems (PASS) research team led by Professor Viacheslav Adamchuk.

Tailynn Chang Makes the Principal's Student-Athlete Honour Role

BOS Lab鈥檚 very own Tailynn Chang has been named to the Principal's Student-Athlete Honour Role for 2022-2023. This Recognition is bestowed upon varsity athletes who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Tailynn is a member of 黑料不打烊鈥檚 varsity Women鈥檚 Rugby team and is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (Honours). She is researching the effect of sex, fatigue, and inter-session learning among athletes in jump landing tasks. Congratulations Tailynn!

The Hackathon returns to 黑料不打烊 campus

On November 3-5th, the 黑料不打烊 Physics Hackathon held its eighth annual event in person at the Rutherford Physics Building. The event attracted around 150 hackers, from CEGEP and undergraduate backgrounds, who joined forces to produce聽.

Public pension plans in Canada and Australia achieve efficiencies through professional asset management at scale

Canada and Australia are both examples of successful pension fund management, said Prof. Sebastien Betermier in a keynote presentation to the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) Thought Leadership Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. While there are differences, both capture similar efficiencies: getting people to save money early, so they benefit from compounding. The assets in these funds are professionally managed, which provides multiple advantages.

Highlighting a stark gender disparity, she points out only 2% of venture capital funding in the UK goes to businesses run by women, while men fill 90% of all senior roles at hedge funds.

New at MORSL: Offering faith-based group support

MORSL is now offering faith-based group support for managing the spiritual and emotional distress surrounding the situation in the Middle East.

Each session opens and closes under the spiritual guidance of a faith leader, with a group discussion facilitated by 黑料不打烊 wellness professionals. Groups are small (7 students) and meet in person at MORSL. A series of 4 sessions is currently being offered to Muslim- and Jewish-identified students respectively. 黑料不打烊 students can join any or all sessions but MUST register as space is limited.

The results of the 2022 Canada Excellence Research Chairs competition were announced this morning at Simon Fraser University by the Honourable Terry Beech, Minister of Citizens鈥� Services. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Fran莽ois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and Ted Hewitt, President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and Chair of the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat Steering Committee.
