February 6, 2024 | The Catholic Church legally challenges Quebec's assisted dying law, arguing the province's end of life legislation violates its religious freedom. The church feels it is forced to choose between a procedure it finds morally unacceptable or abandon its pallative care center in Montreal. Prof. Pearl Eliadis says that this is a case of religious freedom vs. secularism, and that Quebec's Human Rights Legislation makes secularism more important than any other right.

The CEOx1Day program offers some of Canada鈥檚 top students the opportunity to learn directly from executives at some of the country鈥檚 most prominent companies. However, Kriti Pradhan (MBA鈥23), now a senior consultant at KPMG Canada, cautions against succumbing to the temptation of trying to do it all. Today, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced the selection of 126 extraordinary early-career researchers as recipients of the 2024 Sloan Research Fellowship. Amongst the recipients is Courtney Y. Paquette, (Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics). Candidates are nominated by their colleagues, and winning fellows are selected by independent panels of senior scholars on the basis of a candidate鈥檚 research accomplishments, creativity, and potential to become a leader in his or her field. Winners receive a two-year, $75,000 fellowship to further their research.

As many as one in five Canadian households can be considered to be in energy poverty, according to researchers from 黑料不打烊 University. Energy poverty occurs when households cannot afford or access the levels of energy necessary to meet their daily needs, live decent lives, and maintain healthy indoor temperatures all year round. More Canadians potentially suffer from energy poverty than from food insecurity.
