A herd of approximately two dozen heifers spooked during a thunderstorm has been wandering through the countryside east of Montreal since July. All attempts to capture the heifers have fallen short, and the herd has survived by eating unharvested corn and other field crops and drinking from streams in the area.

Food prices have increased by 11% in Quebec in 2022, the largest increase in Canada. In an annual report released on Monday, 26 researchers predict that the upward trend will continue into 2023, but will be less marked. Price increases in Qu茅bec in 2023 should be below the national average, around 5%.

David Wees (FMT) provides an update on a recent project coordinated with Lindsay Flood, Franco Nardi and Freida Beauregard, to plant 200 trees on Campus to honour 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Bicentennial.

鈥淎ltogether, we planted 203 trees. Most have survived. The only tree we had a problem with was the pin oak. Right now, the trees are small and scattered around the campus, but that鈥檚 how it starts. Five years from now, we鈥檒l have a little forest.鈥

The AGSEM Unit 2-Union of Invigilators held its General Assembly on November 17, 2022 to present the tentative agreement to its members. We are pleased to announce that members voted in favor of the proposed new collective agreement. The current agreement expired on April 30, 2020. The new agreement will come into effect upon signature by the parties and will expire on December 1, 2025.

The COVID-19 pandemic was incredibly costly, for the health of the population and the economy. But the next infectious disease pandemic could be even worse. Politicians can choose to prevent it, but they need to take action now, argues听Dr. Joanne Liu (MDCM'91,鈥疘MHL'14, DSc'16) in Scientific American.听 For this to happen, there needs to be a leader-level council that identifies gaps in preparedness, mobilizes finances where they are needed, and holds its stakeholders accountable.

2021 was an anti-climactic year for Black Friday sales. Global supply chains had been disrupted, inventory was very low, and demand was very high. So, retailers had little incentive to sell items at discounted prices. 2022 has been a little different, said Prof Maxime Cohen in an interview with CTV News. Some supply chain disruptions have been alleviated, and there is excess inventory in certain product categories. This set of circumstances encourages retailers to discount products more aggressively.听听

Europe鈥檚 energy crisis has highlighted the gap between the green energy production that we want, and the fossil fuel energy infrastructure that we actually have. When Russia cuts off the flow of natural gas to Europe, there simply is not enough green energy to compensate, said Eric Reguly of The Globe and Mail in an interview with Prof. Karl Moore for Les Affaires. Twenty years ago, green energy was growing faster than it is today, Reguly said.
