Abstract:聽As private university residences have emerged as a new frontier of investment by sophisticated financial actors, international students have also become scapegoats of Canada鈥檚 housing affordability crisis, and scholarship increasingly describes purportedly global processes of 鈥渟tudentification,鈥 remaking some neighbourhoods as isolated 鈥渂ubbles鈥 or enclaves of student life. Drawing on recent and ongoing research in Montreal and elsewhere, I argue that student housing presents a valuable portal through which to understand broader urban dynamics.

Abstract

If you squint a bit at the French word maladroit (translated into English as 鈥渃lumsy鈥) it can look like you are saying (in French) 鈥渂ad at law.鈥 This seems like it would be a very bad thing indeed since we tend to think of the law as something that we want to only ever be good.

Friday, February 28, 2025 13:00to15:30

Abstract

"The law is clumsy because it is, well, the law", suggests the title of this talk. It clearly suggests that we cannot expect the law not to be clumsy. The discourse of law is always awkward - not just sometimes - and lawyers (and litigants) must live with this awkwardness, understand it and work with it.
