Let's say you've signed up for an Executive MBA module. During the typical four-day program, every day you travel to the University, eat one full meal and on average three snacks, and require material resources such as photocopies and other paper materials.

As the program was approaching its fifth year of operation, administrators began to reflect on ways in which these modules could be conducted in a more sustainable fashion; reducing the waste that each individual contributes. Consequently, in one of the programs offered, The Sustainability Challenge, efforts are being made to achieve and maintain the official Qu茅bec classification of an "eco-friendly event".

'The Sustainability Challenge' module is a four day challenge during which participants develop a solid understanding of the concept of sustainable development and the challenge it poses as a societal imperative and organizational goal; become more knowledgeable on the key sustainability issues relevant to their organizations; and learn how to engage with the sustainability challenge as an opportunity for enhancing competitive advantage.

Resources from the SPF are helping this module to attain the classification of an "eco-friendly event level 3" from the Conseil qu茅b茅cois 茅v茅nement 茅coresponsable (Standard BNQ 9700-253).听 The event classification system awards from level 1 to 5 (highest) and the EMBA Sustainability Module is committed to attaining a level 3 classification. To attain this classification, the event's waste management practices, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, supplier practices and food selection need to be reviewed and vetted.

The objective of the program which ran from 22-24 of May 2014 was a maximum of 100g of non-recoverable waste per person per day, and organizers are pleased to report that they met and exceeded these goals. In addition, the event obtained a by planting trees to offset the emissions produced by the event and transportation choices.
