Program Requirements
The Graduate Certificate in Legal Translation is a 15-credit, graduate-level program designed to equip students and working professionals in the legal and business communities with specialized training to enrich their current portfolio or to prepare for work in both the public and private sectors in the areas of legal translation (English to French and French to English) and revision, co-writing of legal texts, and/or consultancy in legal aspects of language in multiple professional settings. Courses focus on principles and practices encountered in jurilinguistics using the most up-to-date techniques and tools. The program may be completed within three academic semesters (Fall/Winter/Summer), or in a maximum of two years. Fall, Winter, Summer entry options are offered.

CCTR 530 Principles of Jurilinguistics
(3 credits)
Overview
Translation : Introduction to the field of jurilinguistics. Examination of the theory of jurilinguistics, including the theory of legal translation (text typologies and equivalency in legal translation), the principles of co-drafting, legal terminology development, and other aspects of legal language, such as readability and plain language.

CCTR 535 Computer-Aided Translation and Terminology (3 credits)
Overview
Translation : Introduction to terminographic work in selected fields of specialization, and to computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools used to facilitate terminological searches and terminology management. Identification and critical use of sources of terminographic documentation, both online and offline. Introduction to other fundamental CAT tools, including machine translation, translation memory, spell/grammar checkers, concordancers, tool bars and repositories.

CCTR 541 Legal Translation: General (3 credits)
Overview
Translation : Translation of legal texts. Overview of legal theory. Examination of legal translation methodology, legal terminology, phraseology, and legal citation guidelines through hands-on translation exercises of different subtypes of legal texts.

CCTR 543 Glottopolitics and Public Institutions
(1.5 credits)
Overview
Translation : Translation policy in unilingual, bilingual and multilingual states, as well as supranational organizations. Study of the concept of translation policy and its applications in selected case studies in legal contexts. Analysis of the effects of translation policy on access to government services and legal proceedings, as well as the emergence of a right to translation and interpreting in jurisprudence.

Overview
Translation : Translation of texts in the field of securities law. Introduction to the regulations governing the distribution of financial products and services in Canada. Practical translation exercises will include prospectus offerings, documents produced by different securities commissions across Canada, judgments in securities cases, corporate securities compliance documents, and shareholders agreements.

CCTR 544 (Co)Writing Techniques for Legal Drafters
(1.5 credits)
Overview
Translation : Drafting of legal documents in a clear and concise manner in unilingual, bilingual and multilingual contexts. The processes and procedures for (co)writing plain yet precise language will be the focus of practical exercises in (co)writing. Familiarity with the stylistic resources of both source and target languages will be studied with a view to making (co)writing outcomes reliable, idiomatic and readable.

Translation : Students produce translated texts in a simulated translation office. A reviser will work with students under the guidance of the course instructor. Overview
Policy : This course deals with fundamental international business issues: the international business environment, foreign exchange risk, multinational corporations, international organizations, international sources of financing, international marketing policies, essential factors to be considered when entering foreign markets (licensing and exporting) and international management.
