Sunday, February 16, 2025 12:45to15:00
Hindu Mission Montreal, 955 Rue de Bellechasse, Montreal, Quebec, CA
 My Neighbour

Join MORSL in experiencing one of the world’s oldest religions at a local Hindu Temple. Hindu Mission Montreal, founded in 1971, accommodates diverse types of worship, including North Indian and Tamil. It offers space to worship on the weekends, a community for celebrating religious festivals, and the services of a full-time pandit (scholar and priest). In the space, you’ll find large murthis (devotional images) of diverse Hindu dieties. Come witness and learn about how Hindu communities practice their faith and also enjoy a vegetarian lunch!

As a courtesy to MORSL, if you can no longer attend, please cancel your RSVP on myInvolvement or email morsl [at] mcgill.ca.Ìý

Etiquette and things to know before you leave home:

  • Travel: Please arrive at 12:45pm at the Hindu Mission, 955 Rue de Bellechasse, Montréal, QC H2S 1Y2. You are responsible for traveling to and from the Hindu Mission. The closest metro station is Beaubien (orange line), and the STM Bus #30 North also passes nearby. Please bring your OPUS card or metro fare.
  • Dress code: There is no specific dress code. However, please note that most community members will be wearing modest clothing in good condition. It is recommended for women to have a scarf with which to cover the head.
  • Personal items: Please keep your personal items to a minimum as you will need to leave large bags in the cloakroom. We recommend a small bag or large pockets for essential valuables (wallet, phone) which you can keep on your person during the worship services.
  • Gender: This community practices gender separation based on male-female identities. Both the prayer space and the washrooms are gender-specific. The dining hall is mixed. If you have concerns about navigating the space, please contact MORSL to discuss alternative arrangements.
  • Allergies: This community makes use of incense and other scented materials in the rituals. This event may not be suitable for people with severe allergies to scent. Additionally, food is prepared in a community kitchen where food allergies may not be easily accommodated. Please know that you are not required to eat the meal in order to participate in the Q&A session.

What to expect about participating on site:

  • You will need to remove your footwear (you can keep your socks on) and leave your boots, coats and any large bags such as backpacks in the cloakroom.
  • You will need to wash your hands before entering the prayer room.
  • A small ritual portion of grain-based food (prasad) is served at the end of prayers. You are not required to take this offering.
  • Seating in the prayer area is on a carpeted floor. Some chairs are also available around the perimeter of the room as needed. Prayer rituals involve both sitting and standing.
  • A vegetarian lunch will be provided in the dining hall after the prayers. You are not required to eat the meal. You may still join the group in our conversation over lunch to exchange with community members and ask questions.
  • There may be an opportunity to help with cleaning up the dining hall for any students who wish to volunteer a few minutes of their time after this event.
  • If you need to leave earlier than 3:00 PM, please advise MORSL staff.
