Plurilingual Lab Speaker Series with Dr. Steve Marshall

You're kindly invited to our next virtual Plurilingual Lab Speaker Series event with Dr. Steve Marshall of Simon Fraser University.

Plurilingualism Across the Disciplines in Canadian Higher Education: From Students鈥 Practices to Instructors鈥 Dilemmas

In this talk, I will present data from research that I have carried out into plurilingualism in Canadian higher education over the last ten years. I will begin by clarifying what I mean when I use the term 鈥減lurilingual鈥 as an analytical lens in my research. I will then move onto the findings from various research projects that I have carried out in the Greater Vancouver area. I will begin by showing examples of students鈥 plurilingual communication strategies: for example, classroom recordings of plurilingual interactions as students negotiate and mediate learning, and examples of students鈥 note-taking in which they combine languages. I will then show data from semi-structured interviews with students and their instructors. In the student interviews, participants describe how and why they use languages other than English in and around their learning. I will then move on to instructors, looking at how they describe and understand their students鈥 practices, as well as the real challenges that instructors face in terms of how best to respond pedagogically to classes in which students use multiple languages as tools for learning.

Bio: I am a Professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. My research focuses on plurilingualism and academic literacy in Canadian higher education 鈥 in first-year academic literacy courses and across multiple disciplines, e.g., Applied Sciences, Political Science, Business, and Linguistics. I have published research findings in various peer-reviewed journals and books, and am also the author of the Advance in Academic Writing Series published by Pearson, ELT Canada.
