More recently, mine began over coffee while perusing through the latest edition of the OSS weekly digest. Being a dentist, I’m always on the lookout for articles featuring dentistry related topics, and my interest was piqued by a recent feature on treating cavities without drilling. This approach comprises a chemomechanical method, whereby cavities are simply dissolved and scooped away.
Wed, 01 May 2019 14:40:09 +0000 Mark Grossman BSc, DDS, Contributor 7740 at /oss What element derives its name from the Latin word for “flow?” /oss/article/quirky-science-science-science-everywhere/what-element-derives-its-name-latin-word-flow
Fluere is the Latin word for flow and provides the root for the name of the element we know as fluorine. One of the common naturally occurring sources of fluorine is the mineral calcium fluoride, also known as fluorspar. It melts when heated and flows readily, hence the relation to “fluere.” In its elemental form, fluorine is a gas and is highly reactive and dangerous, but it does not occur in nature in this form. However, it can be found widely as the fluoride ion, a stable species. It is in this form that it is found in the human body and is in fact an essential nutrient.
Tue, 05 Mar 2013 18:00:09 +0000 Joe Schwarcz PhD 1886 at /oss The Fluoride Controversy /oss/article/health/fluoride-controversy
What is the most common disease in the world? Infections probably come to mind. Or heart disease, or cancer, or perhaps even AIDS. Actually, it is the common cold! And what comes in second?
Fri, 22 Mar 2013 16:24:24 +0000 Joe Schwarcz PhD 1901 at /oss Fluoride and IQ /oss/article/science-science-everywhere/fluoride-and-iq
One thing everyone agrees on when it comes to the addition of fluoride to drinking water is that the issue stirs up emotions, both pro and con. But the question should not be based on emotion, it should be based on relevant science. Whether fluoride can be used as a rat poison, which in high doses it can, or whether it is produced as a byproduct of the fertilizer industry has nothing to do with its efficacy in reducing tooth decay or with its safety.
Fri, 05 Aug 2011 17:12:13 +0000 Joe Schwarcz 1574 at /oss
