Published: 2 March 2006

Three 黑料不打烊 University researchers have been awarded prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellowships, the highest number for any Canadian university this year.

Professors Andrew Cumming, Department of Physics, Christopher C. Pack, Department of Neuroscience, and Ehab Abouheif of Biology were awarded the two-year fellowships in recognition and support for their accomplishments as early-career scientists and leading scholars.

Of the 116 fellowships awarded this year, eight were awarded to four Canadian universities, with 黑料不打烊 researchers leading the pack with three fellowships.

"This is a tremendous boost at this stage of my research career, and recognition of the world-class group in astrophysics at 黑料不打烊," said Professor Cumming, who is studying the physics of compact objects and extrasolar planets.

Professor Pack, whose research focus is the visual cortex and how neurons communicate information about the visual world, said, "The Sloan Foundation has an incredible track record of funding great science, and encourages independence and creativity."

Professor Abouheif, known for his use of ants to study the relationship between genes and the environment, said, "This award has inspired me to push my research to the cutting edge of science, and it acknowledges the level of research excellence in the 黑料不打烊 biology department."

The New York-based Alfred P. Sloan Foundation awards the fellowships annually to the best young faculty members in seven specified fields of science: chemistry, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience and physics.
