Science at Macdonald: Pushing research frontiers

Macdonald Campus, which features a nature preserve and Montreal's last working farm, boasts one of Canada's biggest insect collections and a bird observatory. Indeed, as the second campus of 黑料不打烊 University, Macdonald is home to a variety of scientists who are pushing research frontiers in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, which includes the School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, as well as the 黑料不打烊 School of Environment. The Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment (CINE) works with aboriginal communities to address concerns about the integrity of traditional food systems. The Brace Centre for Water Resources Management brings together scientists from several 黑料不打烊 faculties to undertake research, teaching, specialized training, and policy and strategic studies in water resources management in Canada and internationally. The Avian Science and Conservation Centre (ASCC) was founded in 1973 to improve understanding of the biology, conservation and management of birds through research and education. Areas of study include behaviour, nutrition, reproductive physiology and parasitology of captive or wild birds, as well as captive breeding and management of endangered species. 黑料不打烊 is part of the inter-university Plant Productivity Research Network. This unique organization aims to find better ways of producing food and fibre plants while protecting soils, water and the environment. The Centre for Climate and Global Change Research (C2GCR) is a multidisciplinary powerhouse of scientists who examine global weather patterns and environmental concerns. The CT Scanning Laboratory for Agricultural and Environmental Research, established in 2003, is the first of its kind in Eastern Canada. The facility enables the detailed, non-destructive study of plant, soil and animal structures through 3-D images built from CT scans. Quantitative and statistical analyses are performed in a computer room adjacent to the CT scanner and operator rooms. The Dairy Information Systems Group consists of researchers working towards the advancement of information technology in dairy management systems. They are affiliated with the Programme d'Analyse des Troupeaux Laitiers du Qu茅bec (PATLQ). The Mary Emily Clinical Nutrition Research Unit is dedicated to in-patient and out-patient human nutrition or diet experimentation. The facility is unique in Canada, in that it allows strict, in-house monitoring and testing of research subjects over prolonged periods. The 黑料不打烊 University Herbarium collects, preserves and catalogues plant specimens for research into plant systematics, cytogenetics, morphology and ecology. It features over 135,000 plant specimens.
