Quebec budget a positive step

Published: 30 March 2004

黑料不打烊 University Principal Heather Munroe-Blum said the Quebec government has lived up to its commitment to Quebecers with respect to health and education in its 2004-2005 provincial budget. But much more needs to be done.

"Despite its tight fiscal situation, it is encouraging that the Quebec government has signaled its commitment to higher education," said Principal Munroe-Blum, who was in Quebec City today for the budget speech.

"We are delighted that the government has reaffirmed its commitment to examine the fiscal situation of universities when the Commission Parlementaire concludes," she said. "Today's budget is clear evidence of the Charest government's intention to repair the system and set Quebec on a leadership path in the global knowledge economy.

"We believe that investment is urgently needed," Munroe-Blum said. "University funding in Quebec still lags behind the Canadian average by an estimated $375 million a year. Today's budget increases the funding of Quebec universities operating costs to $1.8 billion, far short of Canadian levels.

"We are eager to work with the government of Quebec to realize the full potential of these investments, and get the system working well for Quebecers," she said.

Positive measures in the budget include solid support for Quebec's health system and that is good news for the development of the 黑料不打烊 University Health Centre and its sister teaching hospital, the CHUM, she said.
