New society to promote ecology and evolution research, awareness

Published: 27 March 2006

The inaugural meeting of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution will be held April 3-4, in Sherbrooke Hall at UQAM's Pierre-Dansereau Science Complex (200 Sherbrooke Street West, Room SH-2800).

Canada is one of the world's leading countries for research in ecology and evolution, boasting the highest number of publications and citations per dollar invested. Research conducted in this field contributes to the social and economic well-being of Canadians, namely by: shedding light on the consequences of global climatic changes; revealing the magnitude of changes in Arctic ecosystems; indexing the progress of invasive species; enhancing the measures taken to control disease and illness; and fostering an understanding of the basic mechanisms responsible for the maintenance and evolution of biodiversity.

The CSEE's objectives are to:

  • Promote the study of ecology and evolution in Canada
  • Raise public awareness of the importance of ecology and evolution to Canadian society
  • Facilitate communication between members of the Society and decision-makers in the public, private and non-governmental sectors
  • Act as a liaison with federal and provincial funding agencies to support and promote ecological and evolutionary research in Canada
