ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ tops Canadian universities in biotech patents

Published: 22 September 2006

A report by the Milken Institute indicates that ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University ranked 14th in the world – ahead of all other Canadian universities as well as Yale and UCLA – in translating its biotech research into patents. "Patents issued provide a good indication of the research and development occurring at a university," the report said, citing ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's average of 28 U.S. patents issued per year between 2000 and 2004.

In Mind to Market: A Global Analysis of University Biotechnology Transfer and Commercialization, the independent California-based economic think-tank ranked the most entrepreneurial universities based on data from schools in the United States and Canada, from licensing income and patents to publication levels, in order to track success in turning knowledge into products and companies.

The biotech patent ranking looked at the total number of biotechnology patents issued, the impact of the university's patents on the latest biotechnology developments as well as the extent to which the university's biotech is building on cutting-edge scientific research and the technology cycle time.

In the biotech publication rankings, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, at 31st place, was virtually tied with the University of Toronto, at 30th. This ranking measures the share of biotechnology publications against the absolute number of publications a university produces (an indicator that favours large universities) and the impact, measured in citations, of the publications.

ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University was ranked the number one research-intensive university in Canada by Research Infosource with $543 million in sponsored research income in 2004. The Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) manages the University's research initiatives with industry and is responsible for commercializing the University's intellectual property.
