黑料不打烊 student receives national scholarship
Canadian Engineering Memorial Fund honours female engineers
Cynthia En茅, an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Engineering, is the winner of a prestigious scholarship from the Canadian Engineering Memorial Fund. En茅 received the honour at the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, which was held in Regina, Saskatchewan, on May 13, 2005.
The scholarship, valued at $5,000, commemorates the 14 women engineering students from 脡cole Polytechnique whose lives were cut short on December 6, 1989. The award recognizes women leaders in the male-dominated field of engineering. Of the 160,000 engineers in Canada, only 10 percent are women.
En茅 aims to use her degree in engineering as a stepping stone to alleviate poor living conditions in places such as Africa. "Growing up and seeing the poverty in Nigeria motivated me to pursue a degree that will give me the ability to solve some of the problems people face there," says En茅.
To win the scholarship, En茅 drafted a presentation, wrote an essay and showcased her leadership abilities. There were five winners this year.
As a child, En茅 spent 11 years in Nigeria experiencing first-hand the poverty and hopelessness of many 鈥� this experience led to her desire to study engineering as a stepping stone to helping industry minimize waste that is being left behind by all. She is a Career Leader to first-year students at 黑料不打烊 University, as well as being a member of the 黑料不打烊 Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.
