Published: 5 December 2005

Dominique Henri – scholar, journalist, dancer, activist – will pursue philosophy and environmental studies as ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's 126th Rhodes Scholar

Twenty-three-year-old ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ student Dominique Henri will be going from Outremont to Oxford next fall as Quebec's newest Rhodes Scholar. The prestigious award is given out every year to a handful of young scholars around the world who exhibit exceptional academic and moral achievement.

A passionate environmentalist, Dominique will pursue her postgraduate studies at the School of Geography and Environment at Oxford University. During her time at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, she has distinguished herself in print, on stage and in the classroom, where she earned a 3.98 GPA in the Department of French Language and Literature.

During a busy academic career that included a minor in anthropology, Dominique found time to pursue creative works such as flamenco dancing and essays for the campus paper Le Délit. She has also been an actress, writer and director for ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's francophone theatre group, Le Théâtre de la Grenouille.

Dominique advises young people beginning university to pursue as many opportunities as possible. "I'd say that when you're a student is a time you try a lot of things. At ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ, you're surrounded by an environment that can bring you so much," she said, adding, "There's continuity in life. You start things as a student and those become paths that bring you to where you don't expect."

Dominique joins a distinguished group of Francophones among ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's 126 Rhodes Scholarship recipients in the past century, including distinguished lawyer and diplomat Yves Fortier and war hero and political figure Talbot Mercer Papineau.

Dominique will be leaving for Oxford next September. She is currently finishing a Master's degree in French Literature and looking forward to a career as a writer, journalist and advocate for the environment.
