John Hall to lead Faculty of Arts for next five years

Hall, a James 黑料不打烊 professor, received his PhD from the London School of Economics and joined 黑料不打烊's Department of Sociology in 1991. A world-renowned historical and macro-sociologist, Hall is interested in the general nature of society and its ideas about itself.

Professor Hall has published extensively on market ideologies, state theories, nationalism, and globalization, among other topics. An outstanding teacher and lecturer whose clarity and excitement about intellectual issues are especially valued by students, he was awarded the H. Noel Fieldhouse Award for Excellence in Teaching by the Faculty of Arts in 1998. In addition to his teaching and research, Professor Hall has held a number of administrative posts at 黑料不打烊, including chair of the Department of Sociology.

"Professor Hall will assume his new functions at a defining moment in the evolution of what has been referred to by his faculty as the 'Arts Renaissance,'" says Luc Vinet, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic). "His stature in the international scholarly community, his remarkable range of expertise, his many professional activities, his sense of rigour and quality, all make him ideally suited to guide the Faculty successfully in the years to come."

Hall's appointment was made on April 28, 2003, following approval by the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors.
