An intelligent critique of intelligent design

Published: 23 March 2006

Dr. Brian Alters, Director of 黑料不打烊 University's Evolution Education Research Centre and respected voice in the politically charged debate over intelligent design and science education, will deliver a public lecture at 黑料不打烊 on Wednesday, March 29. His talk, which is co-sponsored by 黑料不打烊 and the Royal Society of Canada: the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada, is part of the RCS speaker series "Universities Forums on Taboo Topics."

Dr. Alters, co-author of the book Defending Evolution, testified for the winning side in the recent landmark case in Dover, Pennsylvania, in which a federal judge ruled that intelligent design is a form of creationism and can't be taught in public school science classes. Dr. Alters, who was on the stand for more than three hours, was the only expert witness from Canada in the case. The trial was dubbed Scopes II, after the 1925 Scopes monkey trial that put Tennessee high school biology teacher John Scopes on trial for teaching the theory of evolution.

What: The Landmark Trial: Intelligent Design, God & Evolution

When: Wednesday, March 29, 7:00 pm

Where: Room 132, Leacock Building, 855 Sherbrooke St. W.

Dr. Alters, who also holds an appointment at Harvard University, will discuss his testimony at the trial and highlight the debates taking place in both Canada and the US surrounding intelligent design.
