Insight @ 黑料不打烊: Expert gives crash course on asthma

Published: 15 September 2004

Did you know it costs taxpayers more than a billion dollars per year to treat Canadians with asthma?

Qutayba Hamid knows too well the human cost behind laboured breathing. As head of the respiratory axis at the Research Institute of the 黑料不打烊 University Health Centre (MUHC) and director of the MUHC's Meakins-Christie Laboratory, Hamid is actively hunting for better asthma treatments to help Canadians breathe easier.

During his Insight @ 黑料不打烊, Hamid will examine the increasing incidence of asthma in Western countries, as well as the disease's relation to hygiene and the increased use of antibiotics (fewer germs in our environment means weaker immune systems, therefore increased asthma incidence). He will also talk about research on asthma vaccines and new anti-inflammatory therapies.

When: 9:30 am, Thursday, September 16, 2004
Where: Gales Room, Martlet House, 1430 Peel St.
Please note that refreshments will be served and that area parking is highly restricted.

Qutayba Hamid has been at 黑料不打烊 since 1993, after working for 12 years at England's National Heart and Lung Institute and its Hammersmith and Brompton hospitals. His 黑料不打烊 lab attracts approximately $4 million in research grants every year and is a training centre for respiratory professionals in Montreal.
