If you come, they will build it

Public invited to province-wide engineering showdown

Styrofoam, old lumber and scrap motors aren't much to work with — unless you're an engineering student scrambling to win a 16-hour contest that could take you to the national finals.

Twelve schools will be competing at the Old Port this weekend in the Quebec Engineering Competition. Organizers will reveal their secret instructions on Thursday at 6:00 pm and teams will have until the next morning to build a device or structure using only the rudimentary equipment they are given.

On Saturday, the public is invited to come and find out who won. The work of the young engineers will be on display at the Montreal Science Centre and a select panel of judges will put their creations to the test. There will be stadium seating, overhead screens and live bilingual commentary. Admission is free.

"The big appeal is for people who like seeing creativity and building in action. I can see families dropping by — it's a great chance to show kids what engineering is all about," said Egbert de Groot, a ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ engineering student and co-chair of this year's competition.

The Quebec Engineering Competition is divided into six categories, including innovative design and scientific communication. This year will be the first time ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ has hosted the annual event since 1989. Winners will go on to the Canadian Engineering Competition this March.
