Montreal — The Honourable Lucienne Robillard, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Member of Parliament for Westmount–Ville-Marie, today announced, on behalf of Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh, that Health Canada will be allocating $11.5 million to ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University for its Language Training and Human Resources Development Project. The project aims to ensure that English-speaking people in Quebec have equitable access to health and social services in their own language.

"This initiative will help increase the overall effectiveness of the health care system," said Minister Dosanjh. "It will be beneficial to all communities in enhancing their access to health professionals that are able to provide quality health and social services in both official languages throughout the province."

"The funding demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to supporting the vitality of English-speaking communities and to improving their access to health services," said Minister Robillard.

With this funding, ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University proposes to implement the following measures over four years:

Measure 1: Language training program including three components:

  • English second language training for francophone professionals in each region;
  • French second language training for English-speaking professionals working in a francophone institutional milieu;

Measure 2: Retention and distance professional and community support initiatives to encourage English-speaking professionals and English-speaking students to move to or stay in the regions;

Measure 3: Seminars and conferences;

Measure 4: Innovation fund for pilot projects to promote recruitment and retention, in order to support local and regional initiatives.

"It is in the spirit of partnership with key actors such as Health Canada, the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, the 16 regional health and social services agencies and the English-speaking communities that ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ will achieve the project's objectives," stated Uli Locher, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and the project's principal investigator.

These funds are allocated under Health Canada's Contribution Program to Improve Access to Health Services for Official Languages Minority Communities under the support for training and retention of health professionals component. This component is aimed at increasing training capacity through accredited programs in the health field, improving professional development and research, and promoting the retention of health professionals.
