Dining at 黑料不打烊 to get a closer look

Published: 29 March 2004

黑料不打烊 University has decided it needs more time to gather information and consult with students, faculty and staff on how to improve food services across its downtown campus and establish an integrated food services plan.

"We are committed to improving the quality of food served, improving accessibility and enhancing the choices, service, value and atmosphere offered at all locations," said Vice-Principal (Administration and Finance) Morty Yalovsky.

"Food service and quality are important issues for everyone at 黑料不打烊. We have been listening carefully to what people are saying and we have concluded that we need more information and want to allow more time to consult students, faculty and staff before going to tender," said Yalovsky.

As a result, he said, 黑料不打烊 has decided to:

  • Offer contract extensions to existing food providers until May 31, 2005. Extensions are conditional on individual providers abiding by food safety, hygiene, environmental and administrative practices, as outlined by the University, and will be subject to independent auditing. Providers will also participate in the new comprehensive and integrated food plan for the downtown campus sites.
  • Establish a Dining-at-黑料不打烊 Advisory Committee over the coming weeks made up of students, faculty and staff. Yalovsky will chair the Committee. The Committee, which will examine broad issues related to food on the downtown campus, will complement existing consultations with student associations related to specific locations.

The Committee will make recommendations by January 31, 2005, to the University on how best to provide improved service, better choices and quality, more convenient hours, more uniform standards and pricing, better environmental practices, reasonable prices and pleasant surroundings. The Committee will consider such things within the context of the optimal number of providers and the environmental, business and philanthropic practices of potential providers.

Currently, there are 16 food service counters and caf茅s in addition to those in the University Centre, which are operated by the Students' Society with an exclusive contract with a single food provider, and in Thomson House, which is operated by the Post-Graduate Students' Society. Most food service outlets on the downtown campus are operated by four major providers: Tiki Ming (Fontaine Sant茅, Vegie-Rama) in the Arts, Education and Music buildings; Pino & Matteo in the Law and Stewart Biology buildings, as well as under separate contract for the Athletics complex; the Residence Food Services in residences, Burnside and McIntyre; and Chartwells in locations including Redpath Library, New Residence Hall, Engineering, Bronfman and Trottier. As well, the 黑料不打烊 Bookstore operates a Starbucks caf茅 and an independent provider operates a food counter in the Architecture building.

In the interim, the University is already taking steps to upgrade and renovate certain existing sites:

  • A new Bistro and summer terrace at the Bronfman Building will open in September 2004 and offer nutritious Bistro-style food including paninis and cibatas, fresh salads, pizza and calzone baked to order, stir fry, fresh coffee and pastries. The restaurant is being developed in conjunction with the Faculty of Management and the MUS.
  • Burgers and fries will continue to be offered at the existing food service area in the Bronfman basement, which will be spruced up this summer with new tables and chairs.
  • In response to requests from students in the New Residence Hall, 黑料不打烊 recently initiated a Kosher food plan (in conjunction with Hillel).
  • The University is also developing plans to upgrade food service areas in Arts and Engineering.
