Branding our cities

Published: 6 March 2006

Place-branding expert Simon Anholt explains how and why to sell a city

Think of Paris, think of romance. Think of Milan, think of fashion. What comes to mind when you think of Montreal? Gourmet dining and European flair? Or political upheaval and potholes? Perception can determine whether a city will attract the talent it needs to sustain its culture and economy.

Simon Anholt is a pioneer in the practice of place branding: helping cities understand how they are perceived, and what they can do to promote positive perceptions and change negative ones. He will be speaking at 黑料不打烊 University as part of the Meredith Memorial Lectures event called "Intellectual Property at the Edge: New Approaches to IP in a Trans-systemic World." His talk will be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, March 18, at 3644 Peel Street.

Anholt and other world authorities will explore the different ways intellectual property affects cities and societies in North America and in the developing world. "Intellectual Property at the Edge" will show how patents, trademarks and other features of intellectual property interact with a range of activities from economic policy to free expression.

"We're very excited to have Simon join us for this event. His work on branding is world famous, and is a key example of how ideas related to intellectual property continue to evolve," said Professor Richard Gold of 黑料不打烊's Centre for Intellectual Property Policy (CIPP).

"Intellectual Property at the Edge" will take place on March 17 and 18 at the 黑料不打烊 Faculty of Law (3644 Peel Street). The event is being hosted by 黑料不打烊's Faculty of Law and the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy.
