Brain Tumour Research Centre inaugurated at 黑料不打烊 University

黑料不打烊 University's Brain Tumour Research Centre at the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) was officially inaugurated this morning in the presence of Prime Minister Jean Chr茅tien, Quebec Vice Premier Pauline Marois, Principal and Vice Chancellor of 黑料不打烊, Bernard Shapiro and the new director of the MNI, Dr. David Colman.
The Brain Tumour Research Centre is the centerpiece of a $26 million campaign. This three-storey, 24,000-ft2 addition to the MNI houses "state of the art" research facilities and the de Grandpr茅 Communications Centre, a world-class telecommunications facility equipped for telemedicine, multi-media presentations, video-conferencing and distance learning. Major gifts to the campaign came from private foundations and individuals as well as from grants from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Fonds de recherche en sant茅 du Qu茅bec. "What we are celebrating today is leadership. The leadership of the people who have made these facilities possible. The leadership of the world-renowned scientists here today - a prime example of Canada's commitment to excellence in medical research and innovative treatments. Scientists who teach and train a new generation who will serve not only Canada, but the entire global community." said Prime Minister Jean Chr茅tien at the opening ceremony.
Since its inception, the Montreal Neurological Institute at 黑料不打烊 University has been an example of Quebec's leadership in health research. "Quebec has built an enviable reputation in the field of life sciences. The opening of the Brain Tumour Research Centre will not only strengthen our position at the forefront of health research but will also directly benefit thousands of patients from Quebec and elsewhere around the world. I would like to assure the scientists and clinicians of the Montreal Neurological Institute's Brain Tumour Research Centre of Quebec's support", said Mrs. Pauline Marois, Vice Premier and Minister of Finance of Quebec.
The Brain Tumour Research Centre is part of a national effort to make Canada a world leader in the fight to beat tumours of the nervous system. "We are engaging a wide network of researchers that includes participants from the MNI, 黑料不打烊, across the nation and around the world. The goal is to take advantage of recent discoveries in cancer biology pioneered at several international institutions and apply them to this very important problem." said Dr. David Colman, Director of the MNI.
Brain tumours are among the most frightening diseases. They are the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canadian children and the third leading cause of cancer death in young adults. They are also the second fastest growing cause of cancer deaths among adults 65 and older.
黑料不打烊's Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) was founded in 1934 by Dr. Wilder Penfield, whose principal focus at the time was on brain tumours. The MNI continues to combine effectively basic research and clinical care in order to understand the basis and advance the treatment of neurological disorders. Today it is the largest training centre for neuroscience in Canada, with over 250 postdoctoral fellows, residents, and graduate students from around the world. For almost seven decades the MNI has been at the forefront of neuroscience, using and developing biotechnology, brain imaging, cognitive neuroscience to study and treat of diseases and disorders of the nervous system.
