ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University and partners inaugurate new health care research centre

Canadians from coast to coast have a big reason to celebrate today. ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University inaugurated a new research powerhouse at 740 Dr. Penfield Ave. that will advance health care for everyone.

The six-storey structure, an integral part of the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University Health Centre, was constructed and partially outfitted at a cost of $31.6 million to help satisfy pressing demands for modern and cross-disciplinary research space. Occupants of 740 Dr. Penfield – star researchers dedicated to advancing genomics, proteomics and bone research -- will investigate remedies for diseases including cancer, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Four scientific groups will share 100,000 square feet in the new facilities: the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University and Génome Québec Innovation Centre (formerly known as the Montreal Genome Centre), the Réseau Protéomique de Montréal / Montreal Proteomics Network, the Centre for Bone and Periodontal Research /Jamson T.N. Wong Laboratories for Bone and Periodontal Research, as well as five bio-business incubators, which include the William H. Donner Laboratories for Biotechnology. (Fact sheets explaining group mandates are available at ).

Construction of 740 Dr. Penfield Ave. was realized thanks to the vision and generous support of many partners:

  • Génome Québec
  • Genome Canada
  • Canada Foundation for Innovation
  • Recherche Québec
  • Canada Economic Development
  • Ministère de l'Éducation du Québec
  • Ministère du Développement économique et régional du Québec

  • Applied Biosystems
  • Caprion Pharmaceuticals Inc.
  • GeneChem Management Inc.
  • ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University
  • Research Institute of the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University Health Centre

Over the next five years, these partners will provide nearly $50 million in additional funds for operations and equipment for Canada's newest research centre. 740 Dr. Penfield Ave. is a centrepiece of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ's Tomlinson TechSquare -- a North American research hub integrating information, materials and health sciences -- comprising the Wong Material Sciences Building, the Strathcona Anatomy and Dentistry Building, the Lorne M. Trottier Information Technology Building and the Rutherford Physics Building.
