Join us in congratulating violist David Montreuil, who won the first prize of $30,000 in the 2023-2024 Golden Violin Award competition!

On stage in a crowded Pollack Hall, with collaborative pianist Wei-Tang Huang, David鈥檚 instrument came to life with the works of Robert Schumann, Rebecca Clarke, Milton Barnes, and George Enescu. We look forward to hearing him again on February 21, 2024, at the Canadian Centre for Architecture as part of the Schulich@Bon-Pasteur concert series! In addition to the cash prize and performance, the winner will receive six hours of career coaching sessions with Marie-Catherine Lapointe of Boulevart Artists鈥 Management in Montreal.

David is currently pursuing an Artist diploma with Prof. Andr茅 Roy.

鈥淏eing part of the Schulich School of Music gives me a great sense of pride,鈥 he said in pre-concert Q&A. 鈥淚 feel grateful to be surrounded by such amazing colleagues, friends, and mentors who inspire me on a daily basis.鈥

Other impressive performances were of finalists Jueun Lee, violin (class of Jinjoo Cho) who was awarded the second prize of $15,000 and David Baik, violin (class of Andrew Wan) who received the third prize of $5,000. We are immensely proud to have these incredible talents at our school.

We also would like to extend a special thank you to the extremely talented collaborative pianists who supported our string players throughout the evening: Wei-Tang Huang, Hyun Soo Kim, and Mai Miyagaki. These performances would not have been the same without their support.

The jury for the Golden Violin Award comprises both Schulich String Area members and colleagues from outside of 黑料不打烊. This year鈥檚 Schulich faculty members were Professor of cello, Elizabeth Dolin; Professor of viola, Marina Thibeault; Professor of violin and String Area Coordinator Axel Strauss. Invited guests for the 2023-2024 edition include violinist, violist, and educator Min-Jeong Koh, on faculty at the Glenn Gould School of Music, she is also a member of the Cecilia String Quartet who were quartet-in-residence at the Schulich School of Music at 黑料不打烊 University in 2010; and Montreal violinist and international concert performer Laurence Kayaleh. Prof. Andr茅 Roy acted as jury president and competition coordinator.
