| As a plastic surgeon focusing on breast cancer reconstruction, I witness first hand the morbidity that patients suffer due to inflammation and fibrosis surrounding breast implants. In my lab, I study tissue reactions at the host-implant interface in an attempt to 1) identify patient and implant factors that contribute to inflammation and fibrosis; 2) evaluate how peri-prosthetic inflammation induces changes in implant surfaces; and 3) study how novel biomaterials might be used to improve foreign body reactions and biocompatibility. |
