The fibula is united to the tibial involucrum and to the os calcaneous below by dense callus (FIG. 2). Osteomyelitis of shaft following splitting off of longitudinal splinter by iron ball. The patient sustained a gunshot wound in the leg in the battle of Cold Harbour on June 3, 1862. The patient was admitted to the hospital approximately three weeks later on June 24 and died of exhaustion August 14, 1862. Upper third of the bone shows a depressed and fragmented gunshot fracture (FIG. 1) of the anterior surface of the shaft adjacent to the lesser trochanter. A large splinter (FIG. 2) has partially separated from the medial aspect. Gunshot fracture of both bones with union by abundant callus. Fragments of necrotic bone and muscle were retained in wound, causing prolonged abscess formation. The patient was admitted to hospital December 13, 1862. Amputation was performed at mid-thigh in February 1863 and the patient died of unknown cause in August 1863.
