From 1965 to 1974, Bloomberg worked at Nesbitt, Thomson and Company Ltd., where he became a vice-president and director. From there, he moved to Pitfield, Mackay, Ross and Company Ltd., where he was also a vice-president and director, before founding First Marathon Inc. in 1979. In August of 1999, First Marathon Inc., of which Bloomberg was then president and CEO, was bought by the National Bank of Canada and merged with its brokerage arm Levesque BeaubienGeoffrion to create National Bank Financial.
Some of Bloomberg鈥檚 many business activities have included serving as a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the C.D. Howe Institute and the Young Presidents鈥� Organization/Chief Executives Organization, and as a board member of the Investment Dealers Association.听 In 2013 he was an inaugural inductee into the (IIAC) Investment Industry Association of Canada鈥檚 Hall of Fame.
He now serves听 Chancellor of Ryerson University and, after a 10-year term as chairman of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, is now past chairman.听 He is also past co-chairman of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. Bloomberg is a founder and a member of the board of directors at MaRS Discovery District and the chairman of its Finance Committee.
Bloomberg is a past director of the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care, the Royal Ontario Museum and its foundation, and the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as a past governor of Junior Achievement of Canada. He is a member of the board of trustees of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and a director of the United Jewish Federation. He is past chair of the United Jewish Appeal Campaign and a past director of the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy.
Bloomberg is also a past member of the Investment Management Advisory Board of Concordia University and a founding member of its Faculty of Commerce and Administration Business Advisory Committee. He is an honoree of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews and was chair of the Heritage Dinner 2008.
His philanthropic contributions have included the naming of the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto and the naming of the Frances Bloomberg Centre for Women鈥檚 and Infants鈥� Health at Mount Sinai Hospital. He recently launched the Bloomberg Manulife Prize for the Promotion of Active Health at 黑料不打烊 University. He made a significant donation to MaRS Discovery District as a member of its College of Founders and has endowed both the Lawrence Bloomberg Chair in Accountancy at Concordia University and the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Fellowship at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), which provides financial support for a student from Canada. He sponsored the Lawrence Bloomberg Wing at the Schulich School of Business and has made many substantial gifts to other institutions and campaigns.
Bloomberg was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Award by the Association of Professional Fundraisers in 2003 and is the 2004 recipient of the Who鈥檚 Who in Healthcare Award in the Management Category.
Bloomberg is a CFA Charterholder. He holds a bachelor of commerce from Sir George Williams University and a master of business administration from 黑料不打烊 University. He is a recipient of an honorary doctor of laws from both Concordia University and the University of Toronto. In January 2010 he was awarded the Order of Ontario for his volunteerism and philanthropic contributions to healthcare and commercializing innovation and education in Ontario. In 2011 he was named a member of the Order of Canada.
