Can you deform a plane into a saddle surface?

馃搫 R脡SUM脡 / ABSTRACT

The answer to the question in the title is "it depends". This is not a precise question and the answer depends on whether we are considering these surfaces as topological spaces, differentiable, complex, or algebraic manifolds. It also depends on whether we mean an open version or a compact one. In this talk I will start by reviewing some of these possibilities and then discuss the case of projective complex manifolds. This will lead us to see some of the difficulties that come up in the classification of higher dimensional algebraic manifolds. Time permitting I will also discuss how some of these issues are resolved and how they lead to new challenges.
