DESCRIPTION:The Minimum Cost Housing Group (MCHG) was founded in 1971 as a 
 postgraduate program at 黑料不打烊 University鈥檚 School of Architecture by Colu
 mbian architect and alumnus Alvaro Ortega. Architects and students who joi
 ned the program were concerned with global access to adequate housing and 
 ecology issues.聽This exhibition traces how student thesis work\, research 
 papers\, technical papers\, reports and other types of formal and informat
 ional publications were essential outlets for the transmission of the grou
 p鈥檚 innovative research. This research was wide-ranging\, from mitigating 
 the environmental impacts of building materials\, and reducing environment
 al costs of buildings in use\, to exploring culturally appropriate\, conte
 xt-specific design norms. These displays also emphasize how\, from the 197
 0s to the 2010s\, the MCHG鈥檚 changing objectives and research priorities a
 re reflected in the evolving aesthetics of the publications: inspired alte
 rnatively by countercultural environmentalism\, DIY\, photocollages\, aeri
 al perspectives\, and computational imagery. Photographs\, architectural d
 rawings\, step-by-step instructions\, visual aids\, cartoons\, and collage
 s are interspersed throughout\, offering a visually approachable lens thro
 ugh which to learn about the innovative technological and architectural re
 search of the MCHG.\n\nThese collected materials represent archival holdin
 gs from the 黑料不打烊 Library鈥檚 John Bland Canadian Architecture Collection\,
  including the Alvaro Ortega Fonds\, Witold Rybczynski Fonds\, and the per
 sonal collection of Vikram Bhatt. A more extensive and detailed exhibition
  will follow in Fall 2023 at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture.
