Sun-Young Kim earned her Honours B.A. and M.A. in Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto and her Ph.D. in German Studies at the University of Michigan. Before joining 黑料不打烊 University, she taught German language, literature, and culture courses at universities in Toronto and Michigan.

Her teaching and research interests include fostering student engagement through student-centered approaches, such as incorporating self-reflection into participation assessment and integrating technology into the foreign language classroom. Her recent projects include student-as-partners projects, focusing on integrating sustainability into upper-level German language courses and enhancing learning strategies for language learners. In addition, Sun-Young has been an active member of AI working groups, concentrating on academic integrity and the critical use of generative AI tools in teaching and learning.

As Language Program Director in German Studies, she is committed to training and supporting graduate student instructors in their roles as language educators. She collaborates with language pedagogues across programs, institutions, and provincial partners on building a strong German language community in Quebec and Canada. At 黑料不打烊, she teaches all levels of German language courses.
