Montreal retailer Frank and Oak files for creditor protection for second time
In January 2025, the Montreal-based retailer Frank and Oak filed for creditor protection for the second time in recent years. A company statement said it was to protect employees, assets and operations from creditor claims while exploring options to restructure. 鈥淭he brand is not standing out in an environment where other brands have done well,鈥 said Bensadoun School of Retail Management Executive Director Charles de Brabant in an interview with the Montreal Gazette. 鈥淥ther than being an outstanding brand with a cool story, the only thing you hear about them in recent years is that they were under creditor protection.鈥
Vivek Astvansh, Marketing Professor at 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Desautels Faculty of Management and an expert on bankruptcy proceedings, commented that Frank and Oak's repeated filings indicate poor management, adding that the declining Canadian dollar and increased prices are factors affecting all retailers, not just Frank and Oak. Astvansh emphasized that poor management of debt and collections is a key issue.
Frank and Oak began as an online-only retailer in 2012, but has since opened 13 physical stores in Quebec, Ontario, BC and Nova Scotia. 鈥淲hen you expand too fast, everything becomes financial and you forget what your brand stands for, and what gets your core customers enthusiastic about it.鈥 says de Brabant.
