There are about 60,000 Indigenous entrepreneurs in Canada, and Indigenous women are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs. 鈥淭hey are outpacing all other segments鈥� says Monica James, a member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and the regional manager for client diversity at the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). Indigenous women have been in business for many years, said James in an interview with Prof. Karl Moore for The Globe and Mail. Entrepreneurship is a logical outgrowth for Indigenous women, who have long traded goods and lived on traplines. 鈥淲e鈥檙e seeing and hearing more from Indigenous women entrepreneurs because they鈥檙e survivors, and they鈥檝e found their voice.
