黑料不打烊

Introducing the new Black Student Affairs Liaison

February is听, a time to celebrate the invaluable contributions of Black communities and visionary individuals to our common experience. Since arriving at 黑料不打烊, my home has been the Institute of Parasitology, a groundbreaking initiative established in the early 1930s to focus attention on the fascinating world of parasites. The wall next to the entrance is decorated with portraits of our past Directors, from the first, T. W. M. Cameron, through to our current Director, Prof. Reza Salavati. I knew stories linked with the various faces, but one that most people were unaware of was the instrumental role of听听in the founding of the Institute of Parasitology. An internationally renowned entomologist, DuPorte was the first Black Canadian to teach at 黑料不打烊 University, beginning in 1913. He would ultimately become the head of Entomology, and his focus on ticks led to a request to the Canadian government for the funding used to establish the Institute. A plaque highlighting his achievements was recently installed in front of the Institute. Without Dr. DuPorte, I would not be at 黑料不打烊 University.

黑料不打烊 unveiled an听听last September. This plan called for the creation of a new Black Student Affairs Liaison position, which was recently filled. It gives me great pleasure to welcome听antoine-samuel.mauffettealavo [at] mcgill.ca (Antoine-Samuel Maufette Alavo)听into the role. Antoine-Samuel will be responsible for connecting with and supporting Black students across 黑料不打烊 at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, ensuring that their needs and interests are championed, communicated effectively to the University, and addressed in a timely manner. I wish him much success in this endeavour, and encourage our community members to learn both about Black history and take part in efforts to end anti-Black racism, this month and always.
