Getting ready for finals

As weÌýhead towardsÌýthe end of theÌýsemester,ÌýI know that final exams are on many of your minds.ÌýThisÌýperiod willÌýcertainlyÌýfeelÌýfar from typical as our classroom and campus spaces sit empty—regardless,ÌýI want to wish you all theÌýbest, from my living room to yours,Ìýas youÌýtake on your final examsÌýremotely.Ìý

IÌýknow that right now,ÌýacademicsÌýare just oneÌýpriority among many. As you prepare, remember toÌýutilizeÌýsupportsÌýlikeÌýTeaching and Learning Services’Ìý,ÌýandÌýrefer to the list ofÌýadjusted academic measuresÌýforÌýinformation about things like course withdrawals, exam deferrals, the Satisfactory/UnsatisfactoryÌýgradingÌýoption, andÌýmore.ÌýThis has been anÌýunusual semesterÌýto say the least,Ìýso I encourage you to discuss your options with yourÌýAcademic Advisor, Program Director, or Supervisor,Ìýand make the choice that will be best for you at this time.Ìý

I’veÌýalsoÌýseen someÌýconfusionÌýabout the difference between open-book andÌýtake-homeÌýexams.ÌýAn open-book exam is generally timed—onceÌýyou beginÌýthe exam,ÌýyouÌýwill only have a set number of hours to complete itÌý(often three hours to align with our general exam schedule). A take-home exam is not usually timed in the same way. OnceÌýyou beginÌýthe exam,Ìýyou willÌýhave as much time as you need to complete itÌýas long asÌýyouÌýsubmit by the deadline.ÌýWhether you’re doing an open-book orÌýtake-homeÌýexam, my advice is toÌýstart earlyÌýin the allotted period, as this will give youÌýtime to troubleshootÌýif you run into technical challenges.Ìý

Through all of this, rememberÌýto find moments of joy—whether in the new buds of spring returning to the trees, a spot of sunshine,ÌýorÌýa check-in with family or friends.ÌýGood luck in your exams, and remember that slowly but surely, we are getting through this together.
