鈥淵ou shouldn鈥檛 even have the right to education...you鈥檙e black鈥 were the hateful words said to Iona Amico by a fellow grade one student many years ago. Born in France and raised in Quebec, Iona Amico is the daughter of a Cameroonian mom and an Italian dad who grew up biracial in a predominantly Caucasian neighbourhood. Despite having faced incidents of bigotry and feeling like she was between two worlds, she did not let these experiences jade her.

Jessica Kang (B.Ed. 鈥20) knew she wanted a career that would promote her out-of-the-box thinking and allow her to inspire others; her recent ventures as an online elementary school teacher have definitely met those goals. Graduating with her Bachelor of Education degree at the start of the pandemic, this Toronto native has been teaching elementary school students throughout Montreal and across Quebec on virtual platforms, successfully leveraging her creativity to keep her grade five and six students engaged and feeling supported.

Thanks to alumnus David Laidley (BCom鈥67), the Desautels Faculty of Management will soon unveil a Laidley Centre for Business Ethics. Endowed by Laidley鈥檚 gift of $5 million, the Centre will carve out a space for 黑料不打烊 researchers across disciplines to advance ethics in the workplace through academic programming, leading-edge research, and public engagement. The Centre will also have a focus on equity, diversity and inclusion.听

The AMUSE Union for casual employees held its General Assembly online on January 25, 2022 to present the tentative agreement to its members. We are pleased to announce that members voted in favor of the proposed new collective agreement. The current agreement expired on May 31, 2020. The new agreement will come into effect upon signature by the parties and will expire on May 31, 2025.

The parties will finalize and sign the text of the new agreement, and in the coming weeks, the detailed terms will be shared with the community.

Eating disorders among Quebecers skyrocket during pandemic

...Since the COVID-19 crisis began in March 2020, referrals to an eating disorders program at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute increased by 45 per cent. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really quite striking. While AI software could eliminate some bias in recruiting, Professor Matissa Hollister says the tool can exacerbate other types of bias, especially related to gender or education, by relying too heavily on an employee鈥檚 previous hiring patterns. She urges companies to be transparent with their candidates about the use of AI and acknowledge the technology鈥檚 shortcomings when deploying it as a hiring tool.
