Last week, Desautels' Career Management and University Advancement teams hosted the beloved MBA Summer Social event. After a two-year hiatus, attendees were able to reconnect with classmates and meet other members of the Desautels community聽over drinks and appetizers in-person.

It quickly became one of the largest online tutoring services in the U.S., hired by public school districts in over 30 states, as well as four provinces in Canada, to assist their students (mostly middle school and high school).

While the air transport industry welcomed news that millions of unvaccinated Canadians will soon be allowed to fly, experts and unions said a new influx of travellers could worsen the ongoing delays at airports across the country. The government announced that starting June 20 proof of vaccination will not be required to board a train or a plane in Canada. As of May 22, just over 18 per cent of Canadians 鈥 almost seven million people 鈥 did not have at least two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Financial Times has included the Desautels Faculty of Management鈥檚 Master of Management in Finance (MMF) program on its annual list of top master鈥檚 in finance programs, placing it in the top 3 in North America, and 25th globally. The Financial Times 鈥檊lobal rankings reflect program performance in categories like salaries, student satisfaction, and job placement.
Reducing waste can help lower the environmental impact of any business, and Javad Nasiry believes that policy can help achieve this. The fashion industry is a major source of carbon emissions, and fast fashion retailers have made it worse with low-quality apparel designed to be worn only a few times. The Associate Professor of Operations Management argues that the fashion industry could be made greener by requiring the sustainable disposal of waste and taxing waste to make both manufacturers more waste conscious.
惭肠骋颈濒濒鈥檚 Retail Innovation Lab is a testing ground for new technologies, and an automated check-out system that it is currently using will be deployed in 7000 Couche-Tard and Circle K locations. The computer vision technology uses eight cameras to automatically detect multiple items simultaneously at check-out, and Couche-Tard鈥檚 Vishnu Subramaniam gave TVA Nouvelles a demo of the cutting-edge tech in action 鈥 no scanning required.
Alejandra Huerta and Isabela Dominguez envision a future where the shade of your nails can change with a tap of your phone. During Huerta鈥檚 PhD in chemistry, she considered how organic materials could be used to change the colour of cosmetics. But by brainstorming with her sister Dominguez, a computer engineer, they determined that wearable electronics could be a better approach.
Many service-oriented businesses suffered during the pandemic, but it was a boon for Paper, an online tutoring company. Led by Philip Cutler (BEd鈥13) and Roberto Cipriani (BSc鈥08), the company was a finalist in the 2014 Dobson Cup, an annual start-up competition that fosters entrepreneurship and gives cash awards to the best budding businesses. Today, Paper counts more than 450 staff, and over 2,200 tutors.
The future of energy needs to be flexible, according to 脡ric Lachance (BCom鈥96), the CEO of 脡nergir. The company is seeking to replace natural gas with renewable energy generated by hydro, solar and wind. But the alternatives need to fit the situation. Quebec鈥檚 short winter days could make wind a better option than solar, says Lachance.
When Louis Morissette (BCom鈥95) was studying at Desautels, he was also performing in comedy shows. And when he went to the 脡cole Nationale de l鈥檋umour, he found himself wondering what the business plan for comedy could be.
In the years since then, he鈥檚 figured it out. Morissette is the co-founder and President of the production company KOTV and has been an actor and producer for television and film.
The 黑料不打烊 Sports Hall of Fame is honouring Desautels graduate Ann-Sophie Bettez (BCom '11) as part of its Class of 2022. Bettez鈥檚 induction follows a decorated university hockey career in which she was named the CIS rookie of the year as a first-year student, and Canadian university hockey player of the year as a senior. That same year, Bettez was also 黑料不打烊's top female athlete and won the BLG Award as Canada鈥檚 top female student-athlete.

While he was still a law student, Dick Pound (BCom鈥62, BCL鈥67) competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. But that was only the beginning of the Desautels alumnus鈥 decades-long involvement in the Olympic movement. Pound was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1978, and is now its longest-serving member. He has been the IOC鈥檚 Vice-President and the President of the World Anti-Doping Agency, and as he approaches retirement, he credits his success to a no-nonsense approach and an ability to get the job done.
