New work from the聽Alanna Watt聽lab identifying pathophysiological cellular changes that may contribute to ataxia of the Charlevoix-Saguenay region, or ARSACS. This work arises from a very fruitful collaboration between labs at 黑料不打烊 including the聽Brais lab聽(Neurology and Neurosurgery) and the聽McKinney lab聽(Pharmacology and Therapeutics).
New work from the聽Gregor Fussmann聽Lab in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: One of the basic tenets of ecological theory is that connectivity among small populations over a larger landscape (metapopulations) promote species persistence. In this experiment we investigate to what degree and under what conditions this theory holds true when parasites are added to the equation, using lab-based populations of guppies and their ectoparasite聽Gyrodactylus turnbulli.

As an entrepreneurial geologist, Bob Wares, (BSc鈥79, DSc鈥12), became a mining rock star when he discovered one of Canada鈥檚 largest gold deposits in the Abitibi region of Quebec. Now, he is bringing that Midas touch to his alma mater in the form of a landmark $5-million gift that will support research programs, fellowships, innovative research, a lecture series and outreach efforts in 黑料不打烊 University鈥檚 Faculty of Science, with a particular focus on his home department, Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS).

A forthcoming study of over a hundred new cities being built around the world suggests developers and planning authorities are doing very little to make their projects resilient to climate change. On the contrary, a boom in new city projects in coastal areas 鈥 including some on reclaimed land in the sea 鈥 appears to fly in the face of the danger of rising sea levels and more frequent extreme weather events.

黑料不打烊 University chemistry professors Karine Auclair and Tomislav Fri拧膷i膰聽are following a promising lead on using聽enzymes to recycle polyethylene terephthalate (PET), one of the world鈥檚 most widely used plastics.

The runaway popularity of personal electronic devices has led to a huge global demand for compact yet powerful rechargeable batteries. Since hitting the market in the 1990s, lithium-ion technology has taken the lead in meeting this need.
But concerns over the relative scarcity of lithium and the toxicity of other common lithium-ion battery ingredients such as cobalt are driving the search for an alternative. Sodium, around 1000 times more abundant than lithium, could be the answer.

A fundamental component of protein, nitrogen is the most common pure element on Earth, making up nearly 80 percent of our atmosphere. Yet despite its abundance, atmospheric nitrogen cannot enter the food chain without first being converted into a form that can be used by plants.

黑料不打烊 University chemistry professor Matthew Harrington is aiming to develop a renewable alternative to petrochemical plastics by mimicking the astonishing chemistry of the velvet worm 鈥撀燼 creature that has made a name for itself through its projectile slime.
Inhabiting the forest floors of Australia and South America, velvet worms catch their prey by shooting out a jet of liquid that rapidly thickens to a sticky gel before hardening into polymer fibres comparable in stiffness to nylon.

The (LHC) at the (CERN), the most massive and complex science experiment in human history, is a prime example of global achievement through collaboration. Driven by a multinational community of researchers, engineers, and technicians from over 100 countries, the LHC has enabled us to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge.

Cellulose, one of the three major components of plants, is showing great promise as a renewable source for many convenience products. It is made of glucose, a molecule which can be fermented by microorganisms into virtually any desired small molecule of interest. More especially it can be converted to ethanol to make sustainable biofuels.

The way individual atoms and molecules move in materials has important consequences on properties such as electrical conductivity, heat capacity and acoustics. 聽Even in solids, atoms are always moving back and forth about some average position, and this motion occurs through specific wave-like modes called phonons. Phonons form elementary excitations in the material and can therefore carry energy in the form of heat.聽 As temperature increases, so do the number of phonons and vice-versa.聽 The group of Dr.

Gault Nature Reserve special edition
Calling all scientist-artists:
Does the FOREST inspire you? In honour of the 60th anniversary of the Gault Nature Reserve in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, a special edition of the Artists Among Us art exhibition will take place during the months of July and August 2018 at the Alice Johannsen Pavilion of the Reserve.
Artists Among Us is a 黑料不打烊 event聽in which students, faculty, staff, alumni and retirees display their artwork, reminding the campus community how many of our members have parallel creative pursuits.
