A New Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration for Upcoming NASA Missions and Mission Concepts
Scientists have long been captivated by the possibility of discovering evidence for extraterrestrial life in the universe. While many of the world鈥檚 largest telescopes are pointed toward distant galaxies and star systems, some think there鈥檚 a strong possibility that life could be detected much closer to home.
, Professor in the School of Computer Science at 黑料不打烊, has been named a co-recipient of the 2023 Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing. This award recognizes papers in the area of distributed computing that have made a significant and lasting impact in the field.

Carole Verdone-Smith (Management Staff), Sandra Lalli (Technical Staff), and Dr. Kim Metera (Administrative Staff) have been named recipients of the Faculty of Science Excellence Awards for their contributions to the management and success of the Faculty during the 2022-2023 academic year. May 15th and 16th, Falling Walls Engage Hub Canada hosted 30 science outreach practitioners, from across the country, for a bilingual event titled 鈥淭he Power of the Pitch: A Funding and Skills-building Workshop for Canadian Science Engagers鈥.
In a series of workshops, participants learned first-hand from funders what they are looking for in successful proposals and created quick pitches for new science engagement projects.

The outreach branch of 黑料不打烊鈥檚 and Branches joined forces to offer a new science program called Outbound Explore. The groups collaborated with the Cree community of Chisasibi in Northern Quebec, to share experiences and knowledge with youth on science and post-secondary education at 黑料不打烊, with the hopes of inspiring the next generation of scientists.
, a doctoral student in mathematics at 黑料不打烊 University, for his preprint Monochromatic products and sums in 2-colorings of 鈩, a new proof of the special case of Hindman鈥檚 conjecture when there are two colours.

Jamie Kirkpatrick, Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, has been from the Geological Association of Canada. The medal is awarded annually for recent exceptional advances in Canadian earth science research.

It鈥檚 a sunny afternoon at the Office of Science Education office, and I鈥檝e just sat down with Dr. Jasmin Chahal and Alex Wang to talk about the education research they undertook when they teamed up to assess how self-reflection and pre-lab activities affect students鈥 confidence levels and success in a Microbiology and Immunology 384 Lab course. So, how did this project get started?聽

Just shy of 100 faculty, students, and friends packed the Redpath Auditorium on May 12th to celebrate the retirement of Graham Bell, James 黑料不打烊 Professor in the Department of Biology at 黑料不打烊. For the occasion, Bell delivered a 鈥渇inal 鈥渟eminar to the audience, which included his wife and three sons, surveying his career as an evolutionary biologist.

On May 12, 黑料不打烊 University co-hosted the last day of the alongside the Royal Norwegian Embassy and Arctic Frontiers. Over 60 participants, comprising representatives from the governments of Canada, Norway, and Quebec, as well as 黑料不打烊 faculty, researchers, and students gathered in the 黑料不打烊 Faculty Club Ballroom to discuss science, policy, infrastructure, and business in the Arctic.

24 Hours of Science鈥擰uebec鈥檚 biggest science and technology festival鈥攖ook place May 5 and 6. 黑料不打烊鈥檚 many science outreach programs joined in on the annual event again this year, with the Chemistry, Physics, Trottier Space Institute, Earth and Planetary Sciences, STEMM Diversity, Science Outreach, and Gault Nature Reserve teams contributing to the fun.

Chemists from 黑料不打烊 University have discovered the possibility of creating biopolymer-based 鈥渘anosponges鈥 using milled softwood pulp, a sustainable and less toxic alternative to current drug delivery systems. Although the structures developed by the researchers are too big for anti-cancer drug delivery by injection or oral intake, they could potentially be used in dressing wounds, for medical implants, and to capture unwanted materials in wastewater.
