The Isabelle farm in Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, has evolved and expanded throughout the years, from dairy to strawberries to produce, and most recently launching FestiFleurs, a popular pick-your-own bouquet event.

Women make up more than 50 per cent of the graduating cohort for first time in program history.

Convocation is a special time and an important milestone in the lives of graduating students. Today鈥檚 virtual Convocation ceremony for the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences enjoyed a milestone of a more collective fashion, however.

For the very first time, the graduating cohort from the Farm Management and Technology Program (FMT) was made up of more than 50 per cent women.

Phragmite, panais sauvage, herbe 脿 poux, nerprun, renou茅 du Japon聽: ce sont toutes des plantes envahissantes, nuisibles 脿 un certain degr茅, qui prennent de plus en plus de place sur les terres agricoles et parfois m锚me dans nos for锚ts. Plusieurs sont inconnues de la population g茅n茅rale, mais causent de s茅rieux maux de t锚te aux agriculteurs.

Parmi celles-ci, la plus probl茅matique semble 锚tre le phragmite, aussi appel茅 芦鈥塺oseau commun鈥壜. On le qualifie parfois de 芦鈥塿茅ritable menace 脿 la biodiversit茅 des lieux humides鈥壜.

In the first season of Les Fermiers, a hit French-Canadian TV show about vegetable farming in Hemmingford, Quebec, Dany Bouchard [FMT'08], a young trainee, tells his boss and the show鈥檚 star, Jean-Martin Fortier [BA鈥02, Major in Environment], that there won鈥檛 be enough turnips to bring to market that week. 鈥淲e can鈥檛 fight the temperature,鈥 Bouchard says. 鈥淲e have to be patient.鈥

Keesha Ness鈥檚 family certainly knows farming 鈥 they鈥檝e been doing it for nearly 100 years and plan to celebrate when they reach that milestone next summer.

Ness is passionate about farming, loves her cows, and plans to follow the family鈥檚 tradition.

鈥淚鈥檓 definitely hoping to help out with the management side,鈥 says Ness of her family鈥檚 Ayrshire dairy farm in Howick, Quebec.

FMT's Serge Lussier recently received the M茅rite du Conseil interprofessionnel du Qu茅bec (CIQ) from the Ordre des Agronomes du Qu茅bec, awarded for exceptional work in supporting promoting agriculture and its professional aspects. He is the fourth Macdonald staff member, and 3rd FMT staff member, to receive this award since its inception in 1990.
