MONTREAL 鈥� Serbian native Marko Kovacevic, a senior with the 黑料不打烊 men鈥檚 hockey team, is headed overseas to play for Serbia in the IIHF Division II world championships, scheduled to be held in Novi Sad, about 80 kilometres northwest of Belgrade, April 7-13.

The event was put in jeopardy by an early-morning fire at the Novi Sad Arena on March 24, which destroyed one end of the sports complex, including the home team鈥檚 dressing room (see photo). Should repairs not be completed in time, the IIHF has alternate plans to relocate the tournament to Belgrade.

Kovacevic, a 6-foot-3, 218-pound forward from Belgrade who led Serbia in scoring at the world championships last year, posted a career-best campaign with the Redmen this season with 18 goals and 35 points in 39 games overall. The 23-year-old management senior is expected to graduate with a commerce degree this spring.

The Novi Sad team, which includes 黑料不打烊 hockey grads Chris Churchill-Smith, Dan Jacob and Murray Cobb, was expected to supply 10-15 players and equipment to the Serbian national team. However, they lost their dressing room and all their equipment in the untimely fire, which forced a premature end to the local playoffs.

A frantic appeal to hockey contacts around the world, including Bauer Hockey, which has a long-standing equipment-testing relationship with the hockey Redmen, appears to have saved the tournament.

鈥淭he response from around the world has been so encouraging,鈥� said Ron Perowne, Jr., son of the 黑料不打烊 Sports Hall of Fame inductee by the same name, who has billeted Kovacevic during his first few years while playing for the Redmen.

鈥淗ockey equipment has been shipped from Canada, Russia and Sweden, among other places. Serbia finished with the bronze last year in Romania. This year, gold medal aside, we have听already demonstrated a gold medal standard of response and听effective action,听making us all better for the experience.鈥�
