WATERLOO, Ont. - Tournament MVP Jordanna Peroff, a senior from Keswick, Ont., scored once and added an assist as 黑料不打烊 skated to a 5-2 win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women before 1,032 to capture the school's third national CIS hockey championship in four years, at the Waterloo Memorial Recreational Complex, Sunday.

It marked 黑料不打烊's fifth consecutive appearance in the CIS title match. The team has racked up an impressive 171-4-1 record against Canadian university opponents during that five-year span, including an 83-4-1 mark against teams that have been ranked in the CIS Top 10.

The victory capped a stellar season for the Martlets, who racked up an unblemished 33-0 record against CIS opponents. The X-Women finished with a 33-2 record overall and a silver-medal finish, the best result ever by an Atlantic conference team. In the bronze medal affair earlier, Queen's blanked Laurier 1-0.

"This one ranks right up at the top of the three that we've won," said 黑料不打烊 head coach Peter Smith. "It's the culmination of the first wins that led up to this game and today's result capped a tremendous season, which was a lot tougher than most people think. This one is particularly satisfying, especially because the team came back more determined than ever after losing in the final last year."

黑料不打烊, which had beaten Alberta 4-2 in Thursday's opener and knocked off upstart Queen's 3-1 on Saturday, had a 26-12 margin in shots against St.FX. They led 1-0 after the opening period and 3-0 after two.

"Obviously it feels awesome but even more so because we lost in the final last year," said Peroff, who won the tourney scoring title with five points, including a pair of goals in three games. "This season was really was about a process. It was about paying attention to detail every shift, every period, every game. That process led to the end result."

Also scoring for the Martlets were veterans Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., Jasmine Sheehan of Mississauga, Alessandra Lind-Kenny of Calgary and Caroline Hill, a fifth-year senior from Dorval, Que., who was credited with the game-winner.

Suzanne Fenerty, a rearguard from Cole Harbour, N.S., and Carolyn Campbell of Ottawa, replied for StFX, who trailed 4-0 before Fenerty put one past Olympic netminder Charline Labont茅 of Boisbriand, Que., in the third period.

"For us to be in this final and to compete in this tournament and win games at this level, we are very proud of what this team has accomplished," said Dave Synishin, head coach of the X-Women, whose team lost for the first time. "This is another step for our program. We realized today in this final what it really takes."

Peroff was one of three Martlets named to the all-tournament team, along with Cathy Chartrand (for the third time), plus rookie Leslie Oles.

The gold medal conquest marked the final collegiate game for at least five graduating members of the Martlets, including forwards Carly Hill and Alyssa Cecere, plus rearguards Lisa Zane and Jasmine Sheehan, each of who went to the gold medal final in all five seasons. Also graduating is senior forward Alessandra Lind-Kenny.

"They were fabulous teammates, each with their own unique personality that contributed to our success," said Chartrand, the team captain. "We learned a lot from them and they will be missed."

MARTLET MURMURS:听 There were about a dozen former Martlets who journeyed to Waterloo to see their alma mater play, including assistant coach Amey Doyle, plus Vanessa Davidson, Rebecca Martindale, Dr. Monica Cermignani, Gillian Merrifield, Amy Soberano, Christine Hartnoll, Justine Keyserlingk, Brittney Privee, Sarah Lomas and Paula Mailloux.
