The NDG Food Depot is a food bank-turned-community centre that got kicked out of its space last April.聽Most news articles covering the incident glossed over the reasons, staying clear from laying blame or politicizing the event. 鈥淣DG Food Depot forced to move by week鈥檚 end,鈥� read one headline in the聽Montreal Gazette, but it went no further than mentioning disagreements with the landlord.
A friend, Adrian Turcato, and I, decided to investigate. A series of clues 鈥� condo developers making an offer the landlord couldn鈥檛 refuse, a new super-hospital moving in down the road, another community space getting kicked out two years ago 鈥� led us to one culprit: gentrification.
