El Zanaty, Thomson named ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ athletes of week

MONTREAL – Moustafa El Zanaty of Montreal and Jennifer Thomson of
Rosemere, Que., are the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ University athletes of the week for
the period ending Jan. 25.
El Zanaty, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard with the Redmen basketball
team, had 61 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists and eight steals as
ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ split their two-game series with Bishop’s last weekend. The
26-year-old finance and treasury senior shot an impressive 47.6 per
cent from the floor (20/42), 37.5 from three-point range (6/16) and
a stellar 78.9 from the foul-line (15/19). In an 87-66 victory at
Bishop’s last Friday, he racked up 35 points, six rebounds and nine
assists. El Zanaty, a transfer from Fresno Pacific University, is a
graduate of Champlain College in St. Lambert, Que.
Thomson, a 5-foot-7 power hitter on the volleyball Martlets,
registered 27 points as ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ split their two matches over the
weekend, upsetting Laval 3-1 in Quebec City and losing 3-0 to the
No.1-ranked Montreal Carabins. In seven sets, the 22-year-old
physical education senior posted 26 kills, one ace, 32 digs, 1.5
blocks and a 2.76 passing ratio out of 3.0. She enrolled at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ
in 2005 out of John Abbott College and won CIS rookie-of-the-year
honours in her freshman campaign.
