This study examines the conditions under which听portfolios听of听corporate听venture听capital听(CVC) relationships influence听corporate听investor听innovation听performance. We investigate this question using longitudinal data on CVC investment听portfolios听of 40 telecommunications equipment manufacturers. We find an inverted U-shaped effect of听portfolio听diversity on听corporate听investor听innovationperformance. We also find that the effect of diversity depends on the depth of knowledge resources available in the听portfolio. These results contribute to the interorganizational learning,听corporateventure听capital听and open听innovation听literatures by showing how the breadth and depth of knowledge resources available in a听portfolio听of external partnerships with young听ventures听interact to influencefirm听innovation.
